  A

  • Last year Paul and Joanne spent their vacation at the beach. It rained a lot, but they had a good time. You can say:
    작년에 Paul 과 Joanne 은 바닷가에서 휴가를 보냈습니다. 비가 많이 왔지만 즐겁게 보냈습니다. 다음과 같이 표현:
    Although it rained a lot, they had a good time. (= it rained a lot, but they . . .)
    or
    In spite of (or Despitethe rain, they had a good time.

  B

  • Although + 주어(S) + 동사(V) 형태로 사용합니다.
    • Although it rained a lot, we enjoyed our vacation.
    • I didn’t get the job although I was well qualified.
  • althoughbecause 의 비교:
    • We went out although it was raining. (양보)
    • We didn’t go out because it was raining. (이유)

  C

  • in spite of / despite 다음에는 명사, 대명사 (this/that/what, etc), 동명사 -ing 를 사용합니다.
    • In spite of the rain, we enjoyed our vacation.
    • I didn’t get the job in spite of being well qualified.
    • She wasn’t feeling well, but in spite of this she went to work.
    • In spite of what I said yesterday, I still love you.
  • despitein spite of 와 같고, 전치사 of 없이 사용합니다.
    • She felt sick, but despite this she went to work. (not despite of this)
  • in spite of the fact (that) . . ., despite the fact (that) . . . 로 사용할 수 있습니다.
    • I didn’t get the job in spite of the fact (that) [or despite the fact (that)] I was extremely qualified.
  • in spite ofbecause of 의 비교:
    • We went out in spite of the rain. (or . . . despite the rain)
    • We didn’t go out because of the rain.

  • althoughin spite of / despite 의 비교:
    • Although the traffic was bad,
      In spite of the traffic,
    we arrived on time.
    (not In spite of the traffic was bad)
    • I couldn’t sleep
    although I was very tired.
    despite being very tired.
    (not dispite I was tired)

  E

  • although 대신에 사용하는 though:
    • I didn’t get the job though I had all the necessary qualifications.
  • 구어체에서 though 를 문미에 사용할 수 있습니다.
    • The house isn’t very nice. I like the garden, though. (= but I like the garden)
    • I see them every day. I’ve never spoken to them, though. (= but I’ve never spoken to them)
  • even though (“even” 하나만을 사용할 수 없습니다)는 although 보다 강한 의미를 갖고 있습니다.
    • Even though I was really tired, I couldn’t sleep (not Even I was really tired . . .)

 § although 용법:
  (1) although 는 일반적으로 though 보다 딱딱한 말인데 가정보다는 사실을 말할 때 많이 쓴다; 주절보다 앞설 때는 대개 although 를 쓰며, as though, even though, What though ...? 에서는 though 대신에 although 를 쓸 수 없다; 또 though 와 달리 부사적으로 문미에 둘 수 없다.
  (2) although 가 이끄는 절과 주절과의 주어가 같을 경우 그 주어와 be 동사를, Although old, he is quite strong. 과 같이 생략할 수가 있으나 though 의 경우는 드물다.
  (3) although, though 가 이끄는 절이 문두에 올 때 그 뜻을 강조하기 위하여 주절에 다시 yet 를 쓸 수도 있다: Although[Though] she could not study well because of sickness, yet she won good marks in the examination. (그녀는 아파서 충분히 공부할 수 없었으나 시험에서 좋은 성적을 땄다.) 이 yet는 《문어》에서는 특히 문장이 길어질 때에 종속절과 주절과의 관계를 명확히 하기 위해서 쓴다. (출처: 네이버 동아 프라임 영한사전)
