  A

  • John 이 Karen 에게 오늘 먹은 점심에 대해서 말합니다.
    “I had a sandwich and an apple for lunch.”
    sandwich 와 apple 를 처음으로 언급하기 때문에 부정관사 a/an 을 사용해서 “a sandwich” 와 “an apple” 라고 합니다.
    The sandwich wasn’t very good, but the apple was delicious.”
    두번째로 sandwich 와 apple 을 말할 때는 정관사 the 를 사용했습니다. 듣는 사람(Karen)이 John 이 말하고 있는 apple 와 sandwich 가 John 이 조금 전에 얘기한 점심으로 먹은 “바로 그” apple 와 sandwich 라는 것을 알기 때문에 the sandwich 와 the apple 이라고 the 를 사용했습니다.
  • athe 의 비교:
    • A man and a woman were sitting across from me. The man was American, but I think the woman was British.
    • When we were on vacation, we stayed at a hotel. Sometimes we had dinner at the hotel, and sometimes we went to a restaurant.

  • 특정한 것을 표현하는 the:
    • Tom sat down on a chair. (perhaps one of many chairs in the room)
      Tom sat down on the chair nearest the door.¹ (a specific chair)
    • Paula is looking for a job. (not a specific job)
      Did Paula get the job she applied for? (a specific job)
    • Do you have a car? (not a specific car)
      I washed the car yesterday.² (= my car)

  • 정황상 무엇을 또는 누구를 말하는지 분명한 경우에 사용하는 the: 방(집) 안에서 the light / the ceiling / the door / the carpet, etc.
    • Can you turn off the light, please? (= the light in this room)
    • I took a taxi to the station. (= the station in that town)
    • (in a store) I’d like to speak to the manager, please. (= the manager of this store)
  • 위와 같은 이유로 the bank / the post office:
    • I have to go to the bank, and then I’m going to the post office. (말하는 사람이 특정한 은행/우체국을 생각하고 있습니다)
  • the doctor / the dentist / the hospital:
    • Carol isn’t feeling very well. She went to the doctor. (= her usual doctor)
    • Two people were taken to the hospital after the accident.
  • thea 비교:
    • I have to go to the bank today.
      Is there a bank near here?
    • I don’t like going to the dentist.
      My sister is a dentist. (직업)

  D

  • once a week / three times a day / $1.59 a pound, etc.³:
    • “How often do you go to the movies?”  “About once a month.”
    • “How much are those potatoes?”  “A dollar a pound.”
    • Helen works eight hours a day, six days a week.
