  A     Prefer to do and prefer doing

  • prefer to (do) 와 prefer -ing 형태가 가능하며 일반적인 선호도를 표현합니다.
    • I don’t like cities. I prefer to live in the country.  or  I prefer living in the country.
  • prefer 문장 구조 분석:
    I prefer
    I prefer
    but  I prefer
    something
    doing something
    to do something
    to something else.
    to doing something else.
    rather than (do) something else.
    • I prefer this coat to the coat you were wearing yesterday.
    • I prefer driving to traveling by train.
  • 그러나,
    • I prefer to drive rather than travel by train.
    • Ann prefers to live in the country rather than in the city.  or  . . . rather than live in the city.

 § prefer A to B (B 보다 A 를 더 좋아하다)에서 to 는 전치사인 점과, prefer to V rather than (V) 에서 rather than 다음에 동사를 생략하지 않고 사용하는 경우 반드시 동사의 원형을 사용한다는 점에 유의하십시오.

  B     Would prefer (I’d prefer . . .)

  • 일반적이 아닌 특정한 상황에서의 선호도는 would prefer 로 표현합니다.
    • Would you prefer tea or coffee?”  “Coffee, please.”
  • “would prefer to do” (부정사)의 형태로만 사용하고 동명사 -ing 는 사용할 수 없습니다.
    • “Should we take the train?”  “No, I’d prefer to drive.” (not I’d prefer driving)
    • I’d prefer to stay at home tonight rather than go to the movies.

  C     Would rather (I’d rather . . .)

  • would rather (do) = would prefer (to do) = 차라리 …하는 편이 낫다. 차라리 …하겠다. would rather + 동사의 원형 (do/have/stay, etc.)의 형태입니다.
    • “Should we take the train?”  “I’d prefer to drive.”  or  “I’d rather drive.” (not to drive)
    • Would you rather have tea or coffee?”  “Coffee, please.”
  • 부정형은 I’d rather not (do something):
    • I’m tired. I’d rather not go out tonight, if you don’t mind.
    • “Do you want to go out tonight?”  “I’d rather not.”
  • would rather do something than do something else = …하느니 차라리 …하겠다.
    • I’d rather stay home than go to the movies.

  D     I’d rather you did something

  • I’d rather you did something = (오히려/차라리) 네가 …했으면 좋겠다. (not I’d rather you do)
    • “I’ll fix the car tomorrow, OK?”  “I’d rather you did it today.”(= I’d prefer this)
    • “Is it OK if Ben stays here?”  “I’d rather he came with us.”(not he comes)
    • Should I tell them the news, or would you rather they didn’t know? (not don’t know)
  • 이 구조에서 과거형 (did/came, etc.)을 사용하지만 의미는 과거가 아닙니다.
    • I’d rather make dinner now.  but
      I’d rather you made dinner now. (not I’d rather you make)
  • I’d rather you didn’t (do something) = (오히려/차라리) 네가 …하지 않으면 좋겠다.
    • I’d rather you didn’t tell anyone what I said.
    • “Should I tell Stephanie?”  “I’d rather you didn’t.

 § would rather … 다음의 절에 과거형을 사용하는 것은 가정법과거와 유사합니다.
