  • 다음의 예를 보겠습니다.
    Henry is very old. Nobody knows exactly how old he is, but:
         It is said that he is 108 years old.
    or  He is said to be 108 years old.
    위의 두 문장은 People say that he is 108 years old.¹ 입니다.
  • 위와 같은 구조로 사용하는 동사:
        alleged  believed  considered  expected  known  reported  thought  understood
    두 구조의 비교:
    • Cathy works very hard.
    • It is said that she works 16 hours a day.
    or
    • She is said to work 16 hours a day.
    • The police are looking for a missing boy.
    • It is believed that the boy is wearing a white sweater and blue jeans.

    • The boy is believed to be wearing a white sweater and blue jeans.

    이런 구조는 뉴스 보도에 많이 등장하는 표현입니다. 다음은 사고에 관한 보고의 예입니다.
    • It is reported that two people were injured in the explosion.
    or
    • Two people are reported to have been injured in the explosion.

 § ¹ 위의 예문 분석:
  People say that he is 108 years old.
  • That he is 108 years old is said (by people). – 수동태 전환
  • It is said that he is 108 years old. – 가주어(it)로 시작하는 문장으로 전환
  • He is said to be 108 years old. 진주어(that…)의 주어(he)를 전체문장의 주어로 전환하고 that… 를 to… 로 대치.
     부정사의 시제는 that 절의 시제와 일치해야 합니다. 현재/미래 = to do, 진행형 = to be doing, 과거 = to have done.

  B     (Be) supposed to

  • (it is) supposed to . . . = (it is) said to . . . 인 경우:
    • Let’s go and see that movie. It’s supposed to be very good. (= it is said to be very good)
    • Mark is supposed to have hit a police officer, but I don’t believe it.
  • 그러나 supposed to 를 다른 의미로 사용하기도 합니다. supposed to 를 사용해서 계획 되었거나 준비 되었거나 기대가 되는 것을 표현하고, 실제 상황과는 다른 경우가 많습니다.
    • The plan is supposed to be a secret, but everybody seems to know about it.
      (= the plan is intended to be a secret)
    • What are you doing at work? You’re supposed to be on vacation.
      (= you arranged to be on vacation)
    • Jane was supposed to call me last night, but she didn’t.
    • Our guests were supposed to come at 7:30, but they were late.
    • I’d better hurry. I’m supposed to meet Chris in 10 minutes.
  • (be) not supposed to do something 은 …하는 것이 허락되지 않거나, …하지 않는 편이 좋다는 표현입니다.
    • You’re not supposed to park your car here. It’s private parking only.
    • Mr. Bruno is much better after his operation, but he’s still not supposed to do any heavy work.
