Unit 34 Would

  A

  • would(’d) / wouldn’t 로 현재 또는 미래의 동작이나 상황에 대해 실제가 아닌 것을 상상하는 경우:
    • It would be nice to buy¹ a new car, but we can’t afford it.
    • I’d love to live by the ocean.
    • A: Should I tell Chris what happened?
      B: No, I wouldn’t say anything. (= 내가 너의 입장이라면 아무 말도 하지 않겠다.)
  • would have (done) 로 과거의 동작이나 상황에 대해 실제로 일어나지 않았던 것을 상상하는 경우:
    • They helped us a lot. I don’t know what we would have done without² their help.
    • I didn’t tell Sam what happened. He wouldn’t have been pleased.
  • would (do) 와 would have (done) 비교:
    • I would call Sue, but I don’t have her number. (now)
      I would have called Sue, but I didn’t have her number. (past)
    • I’m not going to invite them to the party. They wouldn’t come anyway.
      I didn’t invite them to the party. They wouldn’t have come anyway.
  • if 의 조건절이 있는 가정법 문장에서 would 를 흔히 사용합니다. (Units 36, 37, 38 참조)
    • I would call Sue if I had her number.
    • I would have called Sue if I’d had her number.

 § ¹ to buy a new car: 조건으로 사용된 부정사, “새차를 산다면”
 § ² without … = but for … = if it had not been for … = …이 없었더라면, …이 아니었더라면

  B

  • will (’ll) 와 would (’d) 의 비교:
    • I’ll stay a little longer. I’ve got plenty of time.
      I’d stay a little longer, but I really have to go now. (so I can’t stay longer)
    • I’ll call Sue. I’ve got her number.
      I’d call Sue, but I don’t have her number. (so I can’t call her)
  • would / wouldn’twill / won’t 의 과거로 사용:
    Present Past
    • Tom: I’ll call you on Sunday. →
    • Ann: I promise I won’t be late. →
    • Liz: Darn! The car won’t start. →
    • Tom said he’d call me on Sunday.
    • Ann promised that she wouldn’t be late.
    • Liz was annoyed because her car wouldn’t start.

  C

  • Somebody wouldn’t do something = he/she refused to do it: 거절했다, (기필코) …하지 않으려고 했다.
    • I tried to warn him, but he wouldn’t listen to me. (= he refused to listen)
    • The car wouldn’t start. (= it “refused” to start)
  • would 로 과거에 규칙적으로 일어났던 일을 표현합니다.
    • When we were children, we lived by the ocean. In summer, if the weather was nice, we would all get up early and go for a swim. (= we did this regularly)
    • Whenever Richard was angry, he would walk out of the room.
  • 위와 같은 의미로 사용하는 wouldused to 와 유사합니다. (Unit 17 참조)
    • Whenever Richard was angry, he used to walk out of the room.
