  A

  • 일반적으로 긍정문에서 much (of) 와 many (of) 보다는 a lot oflots (of) 를 사용하고, 특히 격식을 차리지 않은 경우에 그렇습니다. 그러나 다음의 경우는 예외입니다.
    ☆ 학술적인 글이나 문어체에서는 much (of) 와 many (of) 를 주로 사용합니다. a large/considerable/substantial amount of + 불가산명사 형태 또는 a large/considerable/great/substantial number of + 복수명사 형태를 사용할 수 있습니다.
    • Much debate has been heard about Thornton’s new book.
    • There could be many explanations for this.
    • Much of her fiction describes women in unhappy marriages.
    • A large amount of the food was inedible. (or Much of…)
    • The book contains a large number of pictures, many in colour. (ormany…)
  • ☆ 격식을 차리는 내용에서 muchmany 를 대명사로 사용할 수 있습니다.
    • There is no guarantee of full recovery. Much depends on how well she responds to treatment.
    • The government’s policies have done much to reduce unemployment.
    • Many (= many people) have argued that she is the finest poet of our generation.
    • Not once did I see a tiger in the jungle, although I heard many. (referring back to ‘tiger(s)’)
  • days, minutes, months, weeks, years 등의 기간은 a lot of 또는 lots of 보다는 many 를 일반적으로 사용하고 thousands of voters, millions of pounds 등과 같이 number (수) + of 의 구조 앞에도 many 를 주로 사용합니다.
    • We used to spend many hours driving to Melbourne and back.
    • He was the founder of a company now worth many millions of pounds.

  B

  • the, my, its, his, her 등의 정관사·소유격 + many + 복수 가산명사 구조로 사용할 수 있습니다.
    • Among the many unknowns after the earthquake is the extent of damage to the foundations of buildings.
    • The gallery is exhibiting some of his many famous paintings of ships.
  • 반복되는 일이나 많은 수의 사람·사물을 many a + 단수명사 구조로 표현할 수 있습니다.
    • The manager must have spent many a sleepless night worrying about his team selection.
    • Many a pupil at the school will be pleased that Latin is no longer compulsory.

  C

  • 많은 수를 강조하기 위해 a good/great many + 복수명사 형태를 사용할 수 있습니다.
    • She has a good/great many friends in New Zealand.
  • 많은 양을 강조하기 위해 a good/great deal of + 단수명사 또는 불가산명사 형태를 사용할 수 있습니다.
    • A good/great deal of the exhibition was devoted to her recent work.

  D

  • too many + 복수 가산명사 또는 too much + 불가산명사 구조의 앞에는 far (not ‘much’ or ‘many’)을 사용합니다.
    • Far too many students failed the end-of-year maths exam. (not Much/Many too many…)
    • Far too much time is wasted filling in forms. (not Much/Many too much time…)

  E

  • 일반적으로 불가산명사와 복수명사 앞에 a lot of 또는 lots of 대신에 plenty of 를 자주 사용하지만 plenty of 에는 ‘충분한, 풍부한, 남아도는’ 의미도 또한 있어서 내용에 따라 사용하지 않는 경우도 있습니다. 비교:
    • We took lots of food and drink on our walk through the hills. (orplenty of…) and
    • Jim doesn’t look well. He’s lost a lot of weight. (‘plenty of’ is unlikely here)
